Our civilisation was one of care, one of survival. We looked after one another, we looked after our environment. There was no ‘purpose’ as such to life, as you define it now. It was survival. There’s no need for more—we hunt, we eat, we live, we laugh. What is there more to ask? We paint what we see, we see how the bison is mighty, we see how the horse is agile, we see how the goat adapts to the environments. And in these qualities, we ask for the spirit of each of these animals to bless us with those qualities in our rites. The different positions of the bison, horse, etc., are the different qualities we expect from this rite. A curled-up bison, that’s a year where nourishment was important because there were many children, so we ask for protection of our young. We pray, we ask. We listen. The bison knows, it understands. We are not different from nature. We are not predators. We don’t just take, we also give. For our protection, we protect them too. The rites are celebrations, exchanges, moments of joy. Humour is an important part of our lives. The ability to laugh is a great development for the human being. Animals don’t laugh. We do. Animals, we don’t celebrate. We do.
It is the realisation of the interconnectedness that makes humans stand out from other animals. And the possibility of tapping into this is what we can give to other animals. The intentional use of images, symbols, to ‘charge’ reality with intention. And reality responds. To our prayers. To our rites. It’s a two-way exchange. We also give.
When we paint the animal, we immortalise its soul. The animal protects us when living, and the drawing protects it in the afterlife. It’s an exchange.
Everyone is a part of this deal. The elements. An animal is chosen, depending on the condition, on the needs.
The artist is chosen amongst us. Several talents are brewed. There are caves where we practice and caves where we write. It is important to get the art right for the rite. Not all artists make it to the rite artists. Only the best; it is a great honour. It is said that the soul of the artist and the animal it paints are interconnected in this life and others. That they come to this realm together. It is not a creative expression. It is a duty. A privilege.
It is true that we were different from the civilised civilisations you learn about (Egypt, Atlantis, etc.). We lived precariously, survived. And we were taught advanced things by others with more knowledge (survivals). All of us are your ancestors. Not one, but all. Our bodies and their minds. We have developed to make you.
What do you have to say about the fact that when these paintings were discovered in our time, researchers didn’t believe it was possible that your community had the skills to do this sort of art?
Life was simple for us, not because we lacked skill, but because all the technology you now need wasn’t part of life yet. Our brains were smaller because there was no need for the amount of needs you now have. It does not make you better, ‘more’ evolved—please see how evolution means simply adapting to the circumstances, to the environment.
